Finding Relief With A Chiropractor

The aches and pains of pregnancy are a real thing.  The nausea and exhaustion catch up with us quickly. Our bodies are made to do this work of growing a baby and yet sometimes the physiological and endocrinological changes that we go through can really wear on us.  We have options for pain relief and comfort measures.  One such option is chiropractic care.

Research indicates many benefits to both pregnant women and newborns.  To find out more, I sat down with Keri Rowe of Rowe Chiropractic in Lakewood Ranch to discuss the benefits.  Keri has been practicing Chiropractic Medicine for over 10 years in Boston, Atlanta, and now here in Lakewood Ranch. She met her husband and practice partner, Nick, in school at the Palmer College of Chiropractic Medicine.

We discussed pregnant mothers first.  Some of the benefits that women find include:

  • Reduced nausea symptoms
  • Minimize aches and pains
  • Help to optimally position the baby
  • Helps baby to grow well
  • Helps to even hips for both easier delivery and comfort for mom through pregnancy

When a pregnant woman is properly aligned, it evens the placement of the hips, leading to a wider pelvic opening and more space for baby to be optimally positioned.  These benefits work together to allow for a higher chance of an easier (and intervention-free or lesser intervention) birth. It may also shorten the duration of labor.  It also means that walking and moving freely for the remainder of the pregnancy are less painful as weight is more properly distributed.

Chiropractic care is great for your newborn as well.  Especially those who are born in a traumatic birth. Babies can benefit in the following ways:

  • It can correct misalignment of the spine
  • Help to improve latch in breastfeeding
  • Reduce symptoms of colic
  • Help solve constipation

From personal experience, I can add that having a baby born traumatically can make for a generally fussy baby that wants held constantly.  Now, I love holding my babies but holding them all.the.time can lead to some back pain of your own. Aligning baby may help to calm them and make them more comfortable and following up with an alignment for mom means that those hours of lugging the little darling are forgiven as you make your own recovery.

Having a chiropractor that specializes in pregnancy and babies/children is a wonderful thing.  I highly recommend considering adding chiropractic care to your plan for self-care through pregnancy and recovery. If you don’t already have one you love, I can certainly recommend Keri!
